Entertaining this summer means being outside, so you should be up on the current outdoor design trends. Summer sunshine is in full swing, and the weather is begging for having friends and family over. Here are 2018’s latest trends that will help feed your summer fever in a major way!
This summer’s outdoor design trends lean strongly towards the notion that your space present as more than a patio with chairs strewn about. Instead, it should be an outdoor living area that looks and feels like an actual room made for comfort and relaxation. Connected continuity is key, in that your space should be an extension of your living room. Out with the more traditional wicker pieces and in with coffee tables and outdoor-suitable couches. Don’t be afraid to incorporate daybeds with beautiful light-colored fabrics, as they effortlessly conjure up an air of serenity.
The ambiance of the space is key when designing your outdoor living area. Last year’s vibes exuded what I like to call “cool pool chic,” with lots of loungers and classic ‘round-the-pool” seating. This year we’re moving into a zen yoga lounge feel, which is ideal for customizing to your individual tastes and needs. This decor theme embraces the idea of large fluffy, cozy pillows as chairs and white bohemian features throughout.

Last year was all about the well-loved firepit. This year’s outdoor design trends are all about larger scaled fire features that lean more towards actual fireplaces. Some are quite large with mantles meant for mounting TVs, and can encompass an entire wall. Others fit neatly into a smaller corner. No matter what the size, these fire features are perfect for outdoor entertaining any time of the year, and it doesn’t hurt that they’re gorgeous to boot.
We saw a lot of retro-inspired and traditional furniture in last year’s trends. This summer it’s all about contemporary silhouettes. Chairs that are comfortable but also add visual interest are huge in outdoor living. Hanging chairs and egg chairs are having quite the moment. They are available in all sorts of funky and fun shapes and colors.
The warmth of 2018 is making us all wish the sunny days of summer will never end. I’m certain if you incorporate these outdoor design trends, perpetual summer vibes will surround you for months to come!
